We are seeking grow money to grow the Latino Book Month program in South Kingstown. Latino Books Month, initiated by Rhode Island Latino Arts and now in its sixth year in Rhode Island, promotes literacy through the celebration of Latino authors, illustrators and books that highlight Latino culture and Latin American identity. Annually, the organization highlights 5-6 books for each grade group (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and high school). Students are invited to vote for their favorite by the end of May, when the winner in each category is announced. In past years, parents have organized donations to help purchase copies of these books for WKES and PDES libraries, and/or coordinated with the librarians to make sure copies of some of the books would be available leading up to May. With the help of BRMS PTO, the project was expanded to include grades 5 & 6 in 2021. Students at this school pre-read some of the books and created video “trailers” to encourage their fellow students to participate. For 2021 – 2022, we are seeking $1200 to purchase copies of the recommended books for all four elementary schools as well as BRMS.
